The Samsung Galaxy S series is a line of high-end Android-powered mobile devices produced by Samsung Electronics, a division of Samsung from South Korea.

The series consisted initially of smartphones and the first device, the Samsung Galaxy S, was announced in March 2010 and released for sale in June of that year. Since the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy Note Series in 2011, the Galaxy S line has co-existed with the Galaxy Note line as being Samsung's flagship smartphones.

Samsung later expanded the Galaxy S line to tablet computers with the announcement of the Galaxy Tab S in June 2014 and released the next month. As of 2018, the latest smartphones in the Galaxy S series are the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Samsung Galaxy S9+, both released on 16 March 2018, and the latest tablet is the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 released in March 2017.

Phones

Samsung Galaxy S

The first smartphone in the series, the Samsung Galaxy S, was announced on March 2010 and was released on June 2010. The phone received other variants with different features like the:

  • Samsung Galaxy S Duos

Samsung Galaxy S II

The second smartphone in the series, the Samsung Galaxy S II, was announced on May 2, 2011 and was released the same day. The other variants of the phone are:

  • Samsung Galaxy S II Plus

Samsung Galaxy S III

Samsung announced the Samsung Galaxy S III on May 29, 2012 and was released on the same day. The phone introduces features that are not present in its predecessors. It also comes with different variants like the:

  • Samsung Galaxy S III Mini VE
  • Samsung Galaxy S III Slim

Samsung Galaxy S4

The Samsung Galaxy S4 was announced by Samsung on March 14, 2013 and was released on April 2013. The phone has improved over its predecessor, the Galaxy S3, and introduced new features. Being full of new features and improvements, most called the phone a feature creep, while some called it innovation. Still, it received different variants such as:

  • Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom

Samsung Galaxy S5

The Samsung Galaxy S5 was announced on February 24, 2014 and was released on April 2014. Major improvements upon its predecessors are the IP67 Water and Dust Resistance, A MicroUSB 3.0, the ability to record 4K videos, a heart rate monitor, a fingerprint scanner, the ability to record 4K videos,the ability to take better photos in low light levels, and many more. The other variants are:

  • Samsung Galaxy S5 Plus
  • Samsung Galaxy S5 Neo

Samsung Galaxy S6

The 2015 Galaxy S Lineup features four phones: the Samsung Galaxy S6, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+, and the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active. Samsung first announced the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge on March 2015 and was released on April 2015, while the Galaxy S6 edge+, along with the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, was announced and released in April 2015. The Galaxy S6 series improves upon its predecessors by adding the ability to quickly and wirelessly charge the phone, the ability to customize the interface with themes, and many more. The Series also features a new metal frame and a glass body.

The Galaxy S6 series removes major features from its predecessors, including the microSD slot, a removable battery, the USB 3.0 support and the IP67 Water and Dust Resistance from the Galaxy S5. In addition, the batteries in the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge are smaller than the battery in the Galaxy S5.

Samsung Galaxy S7

The 2016 Samsung Galaxy S lineup consists of three phones: the Samsung Galaxy S7, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, and the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active. The Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge was announced on 21 February 2016 and was released on March 2016. It improved upon the Galaxy S6 by adding an always-on display to show information while the screen is off (Optionable), A Dual Pixel camera feature for faster autofocus, an improved low-light photos, and an IP68 Water and Dust Resistance. It also brings back the microSD slot which was present on the Galaxy S5 and earlier iterations of the Galaxy S line but was not present on the Galaxy S6. However, the camera in the Galaxy S7 has 12 megapixels, down from the Galaxy S6's 16 megapixels.

Samsung Galaxy S8

Samsung announced the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Samsung Galaxy S8+ on March 29, 2017 and was released on April 2017. They featured an iris scanner, which was not present on past iterations, a fingerprint scanner which was now placed on the back, a new and enhanced personal assistant which was named Bixby. However, it replaced S Voice, which was Samsung's Personal Assistant until 2017. In addition, the microUSB port has been replaced by a USB-C port. The major improvement is the on-screen keys and the Infinity Display. However, many called the fingerprint scanner as "awkward" due to its placing.

  • The S8 line also received an active version of the S8, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active. However, It removes the curved screen for a flat screen.
  • In 2018, the line received a so called "lite" variant, the Samsung Galaxy S Light Luxury. Due to its design and hardware, most call it as the Samsung Galaxy S8 Lite.

Samsung Galaxy S9

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and Samsung Galaxy S9+ were announced on February 25, 2018 at the Mobile World Congress and was released the following month. with an improved camera, a redesigned back panel and improved internals. The fingerprint scanner on the back is relocated below the rear-facing camera, and the earpiece becomes an additional speaker for stereo sound. The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ are now facing low sales and recognized as the lowest selling Galaxy S series phone since 2012.

  • Many are now waiting for the 3rd variant of the phone which was theorized by many as the Samsung Galaxy S9 Active.

Tablets

Samsung Galaxy Tab S

the first generation Galaxy Tab, The Samsung Galaxy Tab S was announced on June 12, 2014. The tablet comes in two sizes, a 8.4-inch version and a 10.5-inch version.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2

Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab S2 series on 20 July 2015. It comes in two sizes, an 8.0-inch version and a 9.7-inch version.

  • Display: 8.0" Super AMOLED display with 1536x2048 pixel resolution (8.0-inch version); 9.7" Super AMOLED display with 1536x2048 pixel resolution (9.7-inch version)
  • Storage: 32 or 64 GB (expandable)

Samsung Galaxy Tab S3

Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab S3 on 26 February 2017. Unlike the Galaxy Tab S and Galaxy Tab S2, the Galaxy Tab S3 only comes in one size, a 9.7-inch model.

  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 820
  • Storage: 32 GB (expandable)

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4

The Galaxy Tab S4 was announced on August 1, 2018. It features a larger 10.5-inch display with slimmer bezels, and facial and iris scanning.

  • Storage: 64/256 GB (expandable up to 400 GB)
